Happy Veteren's Day

watercolor
General George Armstrong Custer was a controversial figure during the civil war. He finished last in his class at West point but because officers were needed during the Civil War was called to serve with the Union Army. He developed a strong reputation as a Cavalry commander and was promoted to the temporary rank of major general. He and his troops played a decisive roll in the Appomattox Campaign and was on hand at General Robert E. Lee’s surrender. After the war he was demoted to his permanent rank of captain.
After the Civil War Custer was sent to the West to fight the Indian Wars and was soundly defeated and killed in the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
