I've been inspired by my watercolor teacher David Lobenberg to try my hand at portrait painting. After struggling with three botched attempts I started analysing the colors and values of his portraits. Then I took a look at John Singer Sargents work and the colors and shadows of his work. I came to the conclusion I was trying too hard at realisim and turned towards more of a modern impressionist style. I tried to convey the feeling of the boy's sober attitude and it worked much better. Portraits are not easy but I'll keep trying. After all, I like the challenge of trying something new.
